This year's annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for eligible retirees is 1.7%, and it took effect with the September 2026 retirement allowance payments. This adjustment is calculated on the lesser of the retiree's fixed maximum retirement allowance or $18,000.

September unit values for the variable-return Passport Funds are now available. Unit values are based on each portfolio's closing market value as of the end of the preceding month.

The New York State budget for 2026-27, known officially as Chapter 58 of the Laws of 2026, was passed last week. Chapter 58 includes a provision allowing Tier VI members of TRS who have at least 30 years of Total Service Credit to retire as early as age 58 with no age-based pension reduction. Chapter 58 does not change pension contribution rates for TRS members, as it does for Tier VI members of some other retirement systems.

TRS will publish more information about the provisions of Chapter 58 in the future.

Members who are 73 or older this year and have a TDA account must receive a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for 2026. TRS will mail notification letters to members at the end of April and will send email notifications when the letters can be viewed online. But for those who already know how and when they want to receive this year’s distribution, the online RMD election form is available now in the secure section of our website.

The RMD filing period ends on September 30 this year. Please refer to your notification letter for details about this and other schedule changes for 2026
