How can I meet the RMD requirement?

To meet the IRS distribution requirements for a given year, you may choose one of the options below. These options are also described in your notification letter from TRS.

  •  You can elect to receive payment of your full RMD amount from TRS on a date that you choose. Make this election in the secure section of the TRS website or by filing the paper RMD Election Form (code TD39). Note: Any withdrawals you receive during the year will not affect the amount of your RMD payment if you choose this option.
  •  You can receive payment from another Section 403(b) account not administered by TRS. Make this election in the secure section of the TRS website or by filing the paper RMD Election Form (code TD39). You would be responsible for initiating this distribution from your other 403(b) account.
  •  If you take no action, TRS will issue a payment to you that meets the distribution requirement, normally on the last business day of October. Please note that, if you receive direct withdrawals from your TDA account during the year, those withdrawals will count toward your RMD, reducing the amount of the payment TRS issues.
