5-Year Vesting Now in Effect [updated 5/9/22]

New legislation allows TRS members to become vested upon five years of service credit. Previously, the requirement was ten years for all Tier VI members, as well as Tier IV/Chapter 504 members (UFT-affiliated members who joined TRS after December 10, 2009). TRS will update our online materials to reflect this change.

The legislation, Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2022, was enacted as part of the recent New York State budget. TRS will publish information separately about other changes resulting from Chapter 56, including changes to how pension contributions are calculated for Tier VI members.

At this time, our Member Service Representatives do not have any additional information about the above changes.
